Manchester United are confident of beating out Real Madrid in the transfer race for the world-class player who is set to be available for free.

It is no secret that Manchester United have had their issues at the back in recent years. And while they continue to move up the Premier League table, it is because of their form in front of goal and they’ll still be expected to tighten things up in defence.

It has not been for a lack of spending though as they have expensive defenders all across the backline. But things just have not worked out as well as they would have liked. Yet, it might be a free transfer that finally solves their problems.

David Alaba seems to be on the verge of leaving Bayern Munich. The Austrian has been wildly successful during his time at the Bavarian club but they appear unwilling to meet the 28-year-old’s contract demands.

As a result, Manchester United are ready to swoop in and bring him to Old Trafford. And a deal could be agreed as early as January with the Red Devils willing give him a bumper £12 million per year contract.

According to Express, they are confident of beating Real Madrid to the signature of Alaba. The Spanish giants are also in the race for the Austrian, with the future of Sergio Ramos up in the air as his contract at the Santiago Bernabeu. But it looks like the mega contract on offer from United could end up playing a key part in the move.

If United are able to pull the move off, then it could be a huge signing for them. Alaba is just 28 years of age and still has a good few years left in him at the very top level.

Although he started out as a left-back, he has done very well at centre-back since transitioning to that position. And that is where Solskjaer would like to use him as well as it is easily one of their weaknesses.
