Jose Mourinho had a miserable summer in 2018, whereas Paul Pogba had one he would never forget after winning the World Cup (and scoring in the final). In hindsight, this clash of fortunes foreshadowed how things would deteriorate between the two men.

In August, a half-fit Pogba helped United to a 2-1 win over Leicester City, after which Mourinho branded him a ‘monster’. By December, he had become a ‘virus’ in the dressing room in Mourinho’s eyes, and he had stripped the Frenchman of the vice-captaincy. The fallout was very public, to the point where it would always overshadow anything the Frenchman did on the pitch.

A normally cheerful Pogba looked visibly sad, and his form had dipped to reflect that.

The relationship between the pair had become so strained that Pogba was dropped for a must-win Champions League tie against Sevilla, which United lost. It seemed that there was no way their relationship could be rescued and one of them wouldn’t be at the club by the start of the next season.

We all know who that man was, was it the right choice though?
