According to recent reports, Manchester United are interested in signing the €20 million-rated English international next summer.

Managed by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, Manchester United’s current crop of players represent one of the youngest sides in the Premier League. And the lack of experience within the group has often been criticised whenever the going gets tough.

Liverpool star Alan Hansen once mocked at Sir Alex Ferguson by stating, “You can’t win anything with kids“. In reply, United went on to secure a treble in 1999 with the same core of players, becoming the only English side to achieve such a feat. And while more than two decades have passed since then, the record still stands unequalled.

But Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is no Sir Alex Ferguson. The dynamism, footballing scenarios and competitiveness amongst the teams have also changed drastically since then. Everything has developed, and teams have become stronger.

And, to fight the situation, one must have the appropriate mix of experience and youth. United’s acquisition of Edinson Cavani, 33, on the deadline day of the summer transfer window was a massive step in that direction and has already paid dividends.

As the recently-emerged reports indicate, the movement of obtaining experienced players might continue. According to The Telegraph, Manchester United are considering making make a swoop for Atletico Madrid defender Kieran Trippier in the upcoming summer transfer window. The right-back is valued at around €20 million.

More from Manchester United Transfer Rumours

The report believes that Manchester United have been ‘long-term admirers’ of the English full-back, who can play both on the right and the left. Despite him being a top-class right-back for his country, the rapid emergence of Reece James and Trent Alexander-Arnold have seen the English international lose his starting place in Gareth Southgate’s side.

Since joining Atletico Madrid from Tottenham Hotspur in 2019 for a reported transfer fee of €22 million, the 30-year-old has racked up 48 starts, providing eight assists in all competitions so far.

The story from The Telegraph has suggested that his arrival at Ole Trafford would provide Aaron Wan-Bissaka with strong competition for the starting berth and Solskjaer with an attacking threat at right-back. The player himself wants to return to England.

Trippier’s contract will run out in June 2022. And with the futures of both Timothy Fosu-Mensah and Diogo Dalot up in the air, his signing would actually make a lot of sense.
