Premier League heavyweights Liverpool and Chelsea look set to challenge Manchester United for the signature of the young centre-back in the next summer transfer window.

Manchester United have played ten matches in the Premier League, reflecting the hope that they could achieve something big this season, something better than they have achieved in the recent past, and something their fans around the world have long cried out for – a title challenge?

But then again, you look at the points table and discover the number of goals Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s men have conceded till now in the league. It is a staggering tally for a club of United’s stature.

Having kept only two clean sheets so far in the Premier League, Manchester United have had to swallow 17 goals from only 10 games. Now, one shouldn’t only mark the 6-1 loss to Jose Mourinho’s Tottenham Hotspur as a reason for the catastrophic numbers.

The need for some alterations at the centre of defence – perhaps a new signing – is quite evident after the Red Devils’ recent defensive displays.

If reports coming out of Italy (via Corriere dello Sport) are to be believed, United have kept tabs on Cagliari Calcio centre-back Sebastian Walukiewicz. But other than the Red Devils, Chelsea and Liverpool are thought to be admirers of the 20-year-old as well.

A familiar face in the Serie A, Walukiewicz has started all 10 games for Cagliari this season so far. The story reveals that the 6′ 2″ defender possesses not only a stubborn physique but also the ability to keep his head cool under pressure.

Given that the player signed a new contract with the Italian side until 2024 a few days ago, a move away from Cagliari seems unlikely in this upcoming winter transfer window for the Pole. However, according to reports, significant offers could force Cagliari’s hand in the summer.

While Manchester United and Liverpool are the two teams in need of a centre-back, one should never write off Chelsea with the ambition that they have shown under Frank Lampard in the transfer market recently.
