The Manchester United star has received the green light from his childhood club for a possible return in the near future.

Not many agreed to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer when he decided to drop Sergio Romero in the semi-final of last season’s FA Cup against Chelsea despite the Argentine being the starting goalkeeper in the competition until that point. What followed was a nightmare as de Gea had a howler in goal and Manchester United were knocked out convincingly by their Premier League rivals.

The same thing happened when United took on Sevilla in the semi-final of UEFA Europa League; Solskjaer chose the Spaniard over Romero and the Red Devils lost again.

Ever since joining from Dutch side AZ in 2015, Romero has always been under the shadows of David de Gea. Though, everyone will nod at the fact that the Argentine has been a decent and loyal servant of the club over the years.

After Dean Henderson returned from his two-year loan spell at Sheffield United at the start of the summer transfer window, it looked like Manchester United mightn’t have any other option but to let Romero leave in the summer transfer window. He was even linked with a summer to the fellow English club Everton.

Yet, the move collapsed as the Red Devils were not ready to sell the Argentinian to any of their direct rivals. Everton instead went on to sign Robin Olsen from AS Roma.

Romero’s wife showed her wrath on Instagram, having criticized the club authority over the situation. Romero remained silent. But now, it has been reported that he might either move to MLS or return to his childhood club named Racing Club de Avellaneda.

Furthermore, the 33-year-old has received the green light to join his childhood club from their president Victor Blanco amidst the rumours of him leaving Manchester United.

Speaking to the local newspaper Radio Colonia (via Sportsmole), the chief of the Argentine club said:

"“I dream of bringing Chiquito, but he has to come with the conviction of wanting to return, knowing that he’s not going to earn in dollars or the amount of money he earns in Europe.“But Racing opens the doors to everyone who wants to return. In Tita there’s a court with his name, obviously we want him to come, but it’s his decision and I understand if he wants to stay there.”"

Romero was one of the many veterans left out of the 25-man squad for UEFA Champions League this season. As things stand, the club might let Romero leave for his desired club as it would really be ‘a shame’ should they continue holding out his move for a serious amount of transfer fee.
