Edinson Cavani already impressed by new Manchester United signing
Edinson Cavani might have just joined Manchester United but he already appears to be a fan of a new Red Devils signing.
There have not been many Uruguayans on the list when it comes to donning the illustrious red shirt of Manchester United at Old Trafford.
As far as the history of the Manchester-based club is concerned, Guillermo Varela was the last Uruguayan name to play for the Red Devils. He was a full-back and didn’t make much out of his time at the club. Varela left United and re-joined Penarol in 2017.
Before Varela, the only Uruguayan to wear the jersey of the Premier League giants was Diego Forlan. Despite being a household name today, even Forlan struggled to find the back of the net for Manchester United, having scored only 17 goals from 98 appearances.
However, a radical turn of events over the last few weeks has seen not one but two Uruguayans arriving at the ‘Theater of Dreams’.
Manchester United unveiled the signing of Edinson Cavani and Facundo Pellistri on Deadline Day of the summer transfer window. While the former joined the club on a free transfer, the Red Devils went on to trigger the latter’s £10million release clause to sign him from Penarol.
Cavani, the highest scorer in the history of Paris Saint-Germain with 200 goals in 301 appearances in all competitions, finally revealed how much he loves seeing the playing style Manchester United’s new 18-year-old signing and his Uruguayan compatriot, Facundo Pellistri.

In his first official interview as a Manchester United player, he told the club’s official website:
"“Pellistri is a young lad and I really love the way he plays the game.“He’s the typical South American footballer who has that mischievous nature to his game, and the way he lives his football is a bit like, as we say in Uruguay, being on el campito, as we call it, a makeshift pitch where you have a kickabout for fun with your mates or whoever.“He’s a youngster who has a lot to learn but who has a lot to offer too. He’s already shown what he can do at Peñarol, in the games where he’s featured. I’ve liked him from the moment he made his first-team debut at Peñarol, I liked him a lot.“He’s coming here to the club, without a doubt determined to learn and mature as a player, but also to make a good contribution here himself.“Learning his trade here is also going to be a great experience for him. So it’s going to be good meeting up with him and travelling together on this journey in this new chapter for us both.”"
Manchester United have registered both Cavani and Pellistri into their 25-man Champions League squad. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer appears to see Pellistri as a potential first-team player, who can play can play on both the wings. However, it would be interesting to see how much game time Solskjaer hands the teenager in his breakthrough season on English soil.
