The Italian winger had the chance to join Manchester United in the summer transfer window but rejected the Red Devils’ offer.

Manchester United endured a terrible transfer window as the club failed to sign most of the primary targets they would have had going into the window. Signings like Donny van de Beek, Edinson Cavani, Alex Telles and Facundo Pellistri were made but it is hard not to feel disappointed if you are a Red Devils supporter.

At this point of time, there is a gulf in quality between the top two sides and the rest of the league. And while intelligent recruitment might brought a few clubs closer, the same cannot really be said about this Manchester United team.

It is no secret that Jadon Sancho was the club’s top target. But after refusing to pay Borussia Dortmund’s €120 million asking price for the Englishman, the search for a winger continued. And it looks like next on the transfer wishlist was Federico Chiesa, who rejected a chance to move to Old Trafford and chose Juventus instead.

More from Manchester United News

As reported by The Scottish Sun, Manchester United had seen Chiesa as only a stop-gap option, which probably means that there were only open to a loan move. On the other hand, the Italian completed a move to Juventus on an initial 2-year loan, which will be made permanent after that in a deal totalling €50 million.

The Red Devils also missed out on other targets like Ousmane Dembele, Douglas Costa and Federico Bernardeschi. And their hunt for a right-winger can only be termed as a ‘disaster’ at this point of time.

Yes, Facundo Pelistri is a right winger as well. But he is just 18 years of age with 2 goals in his senior career. It would be unfair on the Uruguayan to just come in and deliver the goods without giving him time to adjust.

If right-wing ends up being a position of weakness this season then the board must put their hand up and accept the blame. Yes, the club did spend significant money last summer. But it is clear that more is needed to turn this team into title contenders again. Unfortunately, that was not delivered in this window.
