These are the four Manchester United players whose future at Old Trafford will be decided by their performances this season.

After Manchester United’s long and drawn out pursuit of Jadon Sancho came to no avail, the club turned their attention to swiftly securing options in other areas of the pitch. Securing the signatures of Alex Telles, Edinson Cavani and Facundo Pellistri, with Amad Traore arriving in January from Atalanta. However, in terms of sales, they were still found to be lacking.

The likes of Phil Jones, Marcos Rojo and Jesse Lingard who were expected to be departing this summer could not find suitors to take them.

Therefore, their performances this year will be under even more scrutiny whenever they take to the pitch. Luke Shaw is another who has looked a bit shaky in his displays and could be on his way out of the club come May if his performances do not improve.

Luke Shaw’s Manchester United career has been one blighted by injuries and inconsistency. Although he enjoyed a healthy spell in the 18/19 season, then being voted as the club’s Player of the Year, the rest of his time in Manchester has been a disappointment.

On his day, the former Southampton youth product can still be a very good left-back contributing competently at both ends of the pitch. However, the emergence of Brandon Williams last year saw Shaw’s stock fall even further as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer believed he could trust Williams better. Now that Alex Telles is at the club, Shaw has a top-level left-back competing with him for his spot in the starting XI. Whether Shaw can stake his claim to be United’s first-choice remains to be seen.

If his performances this year do not impress, it is very likely the club will want to sell him while they still can. He is still only 25, so there is reason to believe he can command a decent fee, though nothing close to the £30 million that United paid to Southampton to bring him to the Theatre of Dreams.
