Manchester United look set to finally sign a world-class centre-back

Manchester United could finally solve their problems.

If Ole Gunnar Solskjaer had a magic lamp, the Norwegian would ask for one thing and one thing only from the mythical genie. He’d beg him to bring a world-class centre-back to Manchester United.

In other areas of the field, the Norwegian has managed to assemble a solid squad. In the midfield, Bruno Fernandes and Paul Pogba have the potential to become world-class players and key cogs in Solskjaer’s style of play. Upfront, the Norwegian has brought the best out of the Rashford, Martial and Greenwood trio.

But in defence, the comparisons are stark. United lack cohesiveness and while they are not being exposed nearly as much as they had been at the start of the season the pressing concerns are still there. Sevilla was proof. The tactically astute side managed to outplay the Red Devils and exploit Solskjaer sides’ weaknesses.

The most expensive defender in the world and club captain, Harry Maguire, is a stalwart figure at the back but even he is fallible. He needs the right players around him and at the moment he doesn’t have that at United. Victor Lindelof is still too rash at times and the left-back area is a position that needs to be fixed too.

Solskjaer needs another leader at the centre of United’s defence, someone who could form a formidable partnership with Maguire. Someone who would be on the same level as the Red Devils’ club captain.

And it seems United are working on bringing that kind of profile to Old Trafford as we speak. According to Italian outlet Gazetta dello Sport via the Daily Express, the Red Devils are interested in signing Kalidou Koulibaly this summer.

If the report is to be believed that could signal a huge change in direction for the club.

Kalidou Koulibaly has the potential to have a transformative impact on the Red Devils. The Senegalese is one of the best defenders in the world and he is exactly what United have been searching for since the departure of club icons like Vidic and Ferdinand.

For the right price, Kalidou Koulibaly might just be what United need to take the club to the next level.

It’s take the club some time, but it seems United are finally looking to sign a world-class centre-back. Even if it isn’t Koulibaly, the fact that the Red Devils are showing interest in him is a step in the right direction.
