Manchester United could finally turn their heads towards the transfer market.

It is settled now that Manchester United are going to play in the Champions League next season, owing to the fact that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s men finished a mediocre 2019-20 season with a 2-0 away victory to Leicester City that eventually saw them see off the campaign from a 3rd-spot finish in the Premier League table.

And, as destiny have guided them towards the doors of the elite competition and made them grasp the long-awaited honour, United faithful would be looking keep up the jolly mood surrounding the camp with some new acquisitions from the upcoming summer transfer window.

It is nothing new that the name of Manchester United have always had been at the focal point of each and every transfer window, and a number of names get mentioned to a potential move to ‘The Theater of Dreams’. However, in the majority of times, those anticipated moves don’t materialise for some unknown or some unattainable reasons.

That being said, there still remain some concrete stories — the ones that can not be denied easily. And even this time, we have one for the approaching summer transfer period, with Manchester United interested in signing Jadon Sancho from Borussia Dortmund.

The expansion of this particular story has been so widespread that every man and his dog knows about United’s desire to land the 20-year-old from Germany.

On the other hand, being an English, Jadon Sancho wants to pursue his career in his homeland. And hence, just like the club interested in him, Sancho wants to make the move to Old Trafford as soon as possible, having amassed 34 goals and 43 assists from 99 appearances for the German side since moving to Dortmund from Man City in 2017.

Though, the former Arsenal player Paul Merson believes United should back out of the deal for Sancho and put the allotted money on signing a centre-forward in Harry Kane instead. Speaking on Sky Sports (via Express Sport), Merson claimed:

"“I don’t think they need any of those players. I’ve been so impressed with Mason Greenwood.“He’s been on a bit of trial since lockdown, we get great reviews of him in the reserves and youth team, and he’s come in and produced. I see this lad going on to be something special.“I don’t think they need Jadon Sancho at £90m or £100m – they need another centre half, in fact they probably need two centre halves as cover for Harry Maguire.“Maybe they need a centre forward, but I don’t think you win the league with Anthony Martial playing up front – even though he’s been brilliant and scored goals.“But where are you getting a centre forward from? Every club in the world wants one.“If they have the money, I’d go £120m for Harry Kane.“If they get him and centre half, they’d be massive players in the Premier League next season.”"

Paul Merson has a point here. Manchester United do need to alter their squad by adding some new names. United have had massively lacked the quality bench strength it needs to become a title challenger.

As United already achieved the top four in Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s first season as a permanent boss of the club, the next season’s aim for the Norweigan should be to close in on the comprehensive gap between them and the likes of Manchester City and runaway champions Liverpool.

And to do so, they need some adequate signing going forward, which certainly includes the addition of Jadon Sancho, who is valued at £100 million by Borussia Dortmund. The 2019-20 season has been the best from his part. With 20 goals and 20 assists, Sancho has improved his game to the next level.

While it is true that United do need a forward as a cover to Anthony Martial, who has been great all season, scoring 22 goals for the red side of Manchester so far this term, it very unlikely to see Harry Kane arriving at Old Trafford this summer as adding a centre-forward is not a principal objective for the Mancunian club.

Moreover, considering what could well be a barren period for Daniel Levy, Jose Mourinho, and Tottenham Hotspur amidst the financial conundrum, thanks to  COVID-19, Harry Kane, as a senior figure in the squad, is deemed to have a massive role to play next season in Lilywhite’s outfit.

Next. Greenwood has let his secret slip at last. dark
