Manchester United may have found the ideal Paul Scholes replacement

Manchester United’s latest target has been compared to Scholes.

In the late 90s and early 2000s, the architect of Manchester United’s midfield was a diminutive ‘hustle and bustle’ ginger star. He’d dictate the tempo of the game with his astute distribution and his exemplary technical ability enabled him to conjure up a myriad of opportunities for his teammates.

Paul Scholes was a vital cog in Sir Alex Ferguson’s most successful sides. He wasn’t renowned for his showboating or trickery but rather for his level headedness and measured style of play. The England international has drawn comparisons with the likes of Gerrard and Lampard but Scholes does not deserve to be mentioned alongside the two attacking midfielders, instead he was more like an Iniesta or Xavi for United.

The Mancunian midfielder kept things ticking in midfield. His contribution to the Red Devils was pivotal. In his absence following his premature retirement Fergies United struggled and Paul Scholes had to be shepherded back into the club’s starting eleven and dust off his playing boots merely a few months following his retirement.

More from Red Devil Armada

Even at the age of 38 and nearing his fourties, Paul Scholes was able to demonstrate sheer class and his performances helped United lift a long coveted Premier League trophy after losing out to their arch rivals the year prior.

Scholes left alongside Fergie and the pair’s departure has left a deep void that has not been filled ever since.

United have struggled in midfield over the years. Only recently has the resurgence of Paul Pogba and the arrival of Bruno Fernandes, made the Red Devils’ midfield blossom once more.

But someone like Paul Scholes is still missing from the starting eleven. United need a player who can dictate the tempo of the game and keep things ticking. An astute technician in the same ilk as the ginger star.

And according to a report by the Daily Express, the Red Devils’ latest target Thiago Alcantara could be exactly that.

United have been linked with a move for the Spanish international and one could see shades of Scholes in the way Thiago Alcantara plays.

Thiago Alcantara has impeccable technical ability and he is able to waltz through opponents just like Paul Scholes in his heyday.

If United do make a move, Thiago Alcantara could undoubtedly be up to the task of filling the Scholes void at Old Trafford.

Do you think Thiago Alcantara could be as good as Scholes?
