Manchester United look open to make a move.

You don’t have to be a Manchester United fan to remember the goal. It is a moment ingrained in every ardent football supporters memory. Even six years on, if you close your eyes you can still see it as clearly as it had happened yesterday.

The ball bouncing outside the penalty area, James Rodriguez gently controlling it on his chest and then looping it over the goalkeeper in a terrific lethal strike with his back to goal. It was a sublime moment of genius. One which would later be awarded as the best goal of the year and certainly the best one in the 2014 World Cup.

The goal was meant to herald James Rodriguez’s inevitably prosperous career. The Colombian star had enjoyed a stellar World Cup. He finished the tournament as the top-goalscorer and helped Colombia reach the quarter finals before narrowly losing to Brazil.

His performances were enough to convince Real Madrid to fund a hefty move for his services. At the Bernebeau it was expected that he would fashion himself into the best midfielder in the world.

Alas, things have not materialised in the way James Rodriguez would have liked. The Colombian struggled to settle at Real Madrid and after falling down from the pecking order he was shipped out on loan to Bayern Munich for a two year spell.

The Colombian had an amicable spell with the German giants. He scored 14 Bundesliga goals in two seasons and was a valuable player for Bayern, however his performances were not enough to merit him a permanent transfer to Germany.

Instead he has been forced to return to Real Madrid where has made just 8 La Liga appearances this season.

Largely forgotten, James Rodriguez’s time seems to edging closer to a conclusion in Madrid. And according to Diario Madrista via the Daily Express, Man United are ready to make a move for the Colombian this summer with the club willing to agree to negotiate if they can get Rodriguez on the cheap.

James Rodriguez certainly still possess an abundance of quality. However he is set to turn 29 this year and in the current financial market, even if the Red Devils can secure him on the cheap it would still not make sense.

United are well stocked in the midfield department at the moment. Someone like Jack Grealish would be a much more suitable option for the club.
