Manchester United are set to bolster their offensive department this summer.

With the 2019-20 campaign edging closer to its conclusion and the summer transfer window knocking at the door, teams are getting ready to beef up their squads amidst the unprecedented scenario caused by the coronavirus crisis.

While the red side of Manchester is looking to add some new faces to their squad, their noisy neighbours Manchester City are on the brink of losing one of their best up-and-coming stars in Leroy Sané this summer, with the German international seemingly favourite to return back to his homeland.

German giants Bayern Munich are believed to be the frontrunners in a one-horse race. Since joining Manchester City from Schalke 04 for a reported transfer fee of £37 million in 2016, Sané has massively enjoyed an impressive time in England under the management of Pep Guardiola, scoring 39 goals and providing 45 assists from 135 appearances across all competitions.

However, the 2019-20 campaign has not gone well for the 24-year-old winger, with a cruciate ligament injury keeping him out of the main scenario for 206 days — an injury that has a short but shocking story behind it.

According to an article appeared on The Athletic (subscription needed), Sané was a favourite to make his move to Germany last summer — possibly to Bayern Munich — but the deal did not eventually materialise, owing to an injury Sané sustained in their FA Community Shield match against Liverpool  — where they tasted a defeat to Klopp’s brigade on penalties.

The report suggests Leroy Sané was not in the contention to start the match as it was almost done that he would join Bayern Munich in a few days. But what made him play the match was the unavailability of Riyad Mahrez.

Riyad Mahrez was given a nasal spray by the team’s doctors when he was on his international duty with Algeria. The elements of the nasal spray were unverified to the City’s medical team. Hence, they suggested Guardiola that Mahrez should be kept out of the squad, and the Spaniard did so, giving Leroy Sané another chance to shine.

Sané would have joined Bayern had not he played the match and injured himself badly. Throwback to the current time, Leroy Sané is fit and looking for a transfer this summer, with the German’s contract with Man City set to run out in the summer next year.

Manchester United legend Dwight Yorke thinks Sané could be a great addition to Solskajer squad. Speaking in an interview via Sportbible, Yorke claimed:

"“United has got a real good attacking bunch of young players. Add in Sancho, I like the boy Sane. If I was to airdrop, the boy Sane at City I really do [like].“We haven’t got a left-footed sort of winger. The boy [Mason] Greenwood is coming to the fore recently but I like Sane.“I really do think this kid is probably the quickest out of all them as well and he’s really got a good attitude.“I know he’s got some injuries but if I was brave, if I was Man United manager at this point in time that’s the type of person I would go for.”“He’s had a couple of years in the Premier League, I’ve watched him very closely, he’s a player that I like a lot.”“The boy Sancho is obviously up there as well but if you can’t get him why not be brave and go for a player who’s played across next door and cause some stir, just stir it up a little bit. That’s what I would do.”"

Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola has already confirmed that Sané is going to leave the Cityzens at some point, stating:

"“Leroy has said he doesn’t want to extend the contract. He wants to leave…The club spoke to Leroy two or three times to extend his contract. He rejected. He wants to play at another club.”"

Leroy Sané’s exit from Manchester City is imminent — whether it would be in the upcoming summer or in the next year when his contract expires remains to be seen.

Meanwhile, Manchester United have not shown any interest in the winger, with the name of Jadon Sancho understandably covering the top spot in United’s shortlist for wingers.
