Manchester United are reportedly chasing a veteran.

He was deemed to be the next pioneer to guide the red side of Manchester back to their glory days. His arrival at “The Theater of Dreams” made everyone surrounding the club hopeful of something the fans were crying for since the departure of Sir Alex Ferguson.

It was suspected as the commencement of a new era of domination for the Red Devils. It was the return of ‘the special one’ – Jose Mourinho. After a successful spell at Chelsea that saw the Portuguese manager helped the Londoners win the devoted Premier League title back in 2014-15 season, the master of mind-games was back on the English soil.

He became the manager of a Manchester United side that had only won the FA Cup in the previous season with Louis van Gaal, the gaffer who was sacked by United board prior to the arrival of Jose Mourinho.

More from Red Devil Armada

Mourinho’s glorifying history provoked two big names to join the Manchester club – one was Paul Pogba, a club-record signing of £89m from Juventus, and the other was a free transfer in the form of Zlatan Ibrahimović. Both superstars endured a magnificent first season at the club, winning the EFL Cup and Europa League in the process.

All the ingredients were there for Jose Mourinho in his way to become a successful patron at Old Trafford, but he failed to produce a delicious recipe out of those ingredients. Henceforth, a run of terrible results and a Publicly Known-feud with Paul Pogba forced United chief Ed Woodward to cut Mourinho’s name from the list. And he did so by paying  £19.6m compensation fee to Jose Mourinho and his staffs.

One man who Mourinho really wanted to bring to Manchester United during his last two transfer windows is Willian Borges da Silva, who was playing for Chelsea then. Mourinho has always been full of praise for the Brazilian winger. He was a gem for the two-time Champions League-winning manager at the Stamford Bridge.

According to the stats provided by Transfermarkt, Willian has played 114 matches in total under the management of Jose Mourinho, amassing 15 goals and 14 assists while running down the wing.

However, these stats were from the past, and several years have passed. Willian is now 31, and his progress is on a steady decline. The 2019-20 season has seen him featured in Frank Lampard’s first-team 37 times. Though, his records are not like the ones mentioned before.

From 37 appliances, the current No. 10 for Chelsea has garnered 7 goals and 6 assists across all competitions. With Willian’s contract with Chelsea set to expire at the end of the current season, the Brazilian is in the hunt for a new destination.

And reports surrounding the London club claim Willian has no intention to leave England this summer. Hence, a top-tier English club would the preferred option for the 31-year-old veteran.

Now, according to reports from France Football, Manchester United are keen on signing Willian for free this summer and have already made contact with the player’s representatives.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, on the other hand, is seemingly building a team for the future. But it is expected that Willian’s experience at the highest level could be worthwhile for the Red Devils. With Willian, they would get a cover for both Marcus Rashford and Daniel James as the Brazilian is capable of playing both wings.

Tough, It remains to be seen how the story develops in the next few weeks.
