Manchester United’s potential signing could be the next Owen.

When Michael Owen signed for Manchester United, his transfer created a wave of uproar in Merseyside. It was the ultimate spite for Liverpool. Sir Alex Ferguson had brought a player who was a hero at Anfield and made him into a villain.

Michael Owen’s time at Old Trafford elicited little excitement. The furore was definitely more prominent in the perpetual discussions across the media.

Michael Owen’s status as a Liverpool legend had been tarnished, and while he rarely caught the eye in a Red Devils shirt, United fans still look back at his time fondly and boast about Owen’s period wearing the club’s colours.

The move was a genius one by Sir Alex Ferguson. It antagonised his biggest rivals at the time and gained a mental advantage over Liverpool.

Now Ole Gunnar Solskjaer may be about to make a similar move.

According to the Independent via Manchester Evening News, the Red Devils are considering making a move for Raheem Sterling if the club’s arch rivals Manchester City are banned from Europe.

And if the Norwegian boss does indeed pounce for Raheem Sterling, than it could prove to be a move that will surpass the infamy of Michael Owen’s transfer.

Not only has Sterling played for Manchester City but he is also a Liverpool academy product where he was adored as he came through the ranks before he hastily left for the blue side of Manchester.

Sir Alex Ferguson was often ruthless as a manager and he would love to get on his rivals’ nerves. Making a move for Sterling will achieve that and much more.

Unlike Owen, Raheem Sterling is actually still in his prime. The Manchester City winger is regarded as an elite talent in world football. His stats in terms of goals and assists are a marvel to behold and he could be well suited to the style of play deployed by Solskjaer.

Lining-up alongside Marcus Rashford and Mason Greenwood could not only form the basis for a long term partnership at club level but for England too.

The deal has the perfect recipe to cause a stir on the blue side of Manchester which will echo in Merseyside and fulfil Solskjaer’s aspirations of a new United hegemony.
