According to the latest reports, Manchester United could be about to lose out on this ideal Ed Woodward replacement to a Premier League rival.

Football is a mercenary sport. Money, power and status always reigns supreme. Fans cling to prestige and are sometimes vacuously adamant that their team is the best in the world. Manchester United fans are no stranger to status and power.

The Red Devils are one of the biggest names in world-football. The club is a powerhouse and a well recognised global brand.

Perhaps it is why the Red Devils’ struggles have been an especially bitter blow over the last few seasons.

Much of the blame for United’s failure to live up to their status on the pitch has been directed towards the club’s chief, Ed Woodward.

Woodward has made several mishaps whilst in charge of United. Often times, he has failed to recruit the right targets, other times, he has been hasty in negotiations and has offered steep wages to players who would ultimately did not merit it.

The most frustrating thing about the club during Woodward’s tenure has been the lack of cohesiveness and unity.  The Red Devils have often lacked a clear strategy.

A director of football would have alleviated much of those problems and relieved Woodward of his transfer duties.

Antero Henrique has been a name which has often been purported to be in with a shot at replacing Ed Woodward. With a high pedigree having sanctioned moves like Kylian Mbappe‘s transfer to Paris Saint Germain and having had a plethora of experience, Antero Henrique could have been the perfect candidate for the role.

However it seems that the Red Devils might encounter a stumbling block in their endeavour to bring Antero Henrique to Old Trafford.

According to Le10Sport via the Daily Express, Newcastle United have now emerged as the front runners to recruit Antero Henrique.

With Newcastle set for a lucrative takeover, the Magpies will purportedly have a hefty injection of wealth which could see them competing with the current big six in the Premier League. And that will make the prospect of becoming director of football at Newcastle an enticing one.

If the Magpies do indeed manage to lure Antero Henrique to St James Park it will be a huge statement of intent and it could be one that will prove costly for the Red Devils in the future.
