According to the reports, Manchester United are keen on signing yet another centre-back in the upcoming summer transfer window.

Even if you have not been following Manchester United for years, you will have heard of Nemanja Vidić and Rio Ferdinand.

For years they were the pinnacle partnership in world football. The level of consistency the defensive pair had shown during their playing days are hard to find these days.

Nemanja Vidić and Rio Ferdinand – arguably two of United’s greatest centre-backs – were known for their hardness, audacity, and warrior-like attitudes on the field.  They helped Alex Ferguson win a plethora of trophies during his 27-years stint at the red side of Manchester.

While watching them play elicited delight at the Stretford End, seeing them leaving was one of the most difficult times for a Man United fan.

Since the duo left, United have hardly found a character like them. The pairing of Chris Smalling and Phil Jones, which was touted as the next Ferdinand-Vidic, massively failed to live up to expectations.

However, under the management of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, the Red Devils have made some notable improvements to their defensive department.

Signing Harry Maguire and Aaron Wan- Bissaka were two of the smart moves Solskjaer made last summer. Tough, we may not overlook how much money United did spend to secure their services.

While United went on to splash a reported £80 million to sign Harry Maguire from Leicester City and made the Englishman world’s the most expensive defender, Aaron Wan-Bissaka cost United around £50 million.

According to the recently emerged report from ESPN,  Man United are looking to sign another defender from the upcoming summer transfer market.

The report believes that United are currently keeping tabs on a number of defensive targets. However, the name of 21-year-old Real Valladolid centre-back Mohammed Salisu has been considered heavily by the Red Devils.

Manchester United currently have five centre-backs in their roster – Harry Maguire, Victor Lindelof, Eric BaillyAxel Tuanzebe, and Phil Jones.

While Maguire and Lindelof have established themselves as Solskjaer’s no. 1 defensive choice, Eric Baily and Axel Tuanzebe have found themselves sidelined for most of the 2019-20 season with their respective injuries, which has made the Red Devils vulnerable in that area. However the pair of them are now fit and raring to go.

And with Phil Jones seemingly being the only out-of-favoured defender in the team, do you think Manchester United need to sign a centre-back this summer?
