According to the latest reports, Manchester United could be set to give the famous number seven shirt to a surprising player in the squad next season.

Cristiano Ronaldo, David Beckham, George Best and Eric Cantona. The names are indelible to the Manchester United faithful. However it isn’t just their legendary status which they have in common. The quartet have also all worn the famous number seven shirt at Old Trafford.

They are names who have made mighty contributions whilst representing the Red Devils.

Cristiano Ronaldo was the last to don the number among the four.

The world-class Portuguese star would make the Stretford End gleam whilst wearing the famous number on his back. He’d slalom past thickets of defenders and score goals for fun.

More from Red Devil Armada

Ronaldo’s memory still lingers in the minds of many despite having left the club over a decade ago.

Since then five players have worn the shirt at Old Trafford and have tried to erase the lingering memory of Ronaldo to no avail.

Antonio Valencia, Michael Owen, Memphis Depay, Angel Di Maria and Alexis Sanchez all arrived with high hopes.

All five had the potential to become key players for the Red Devils, but for some reason they never delivered upon those expectations.

There is a clear burden on the shirt number at United and perhaps even some sort of curse.

It is a curse the Red Devils will be desperate to break and according to Manchester Evening News, there is a surprise contender for the number seven shirt at Old Trafford.

The Manchester based news outlet claims that Hannibal Mejbri from the club’s academy could be a surprise long term contender for the number seven shirt.

Hannibal Mejbri arrived at the club last season from Monaco. The French midfielder is still just 17 years of age but he has played with maturity in the club’s U23 side this season.

Mejbri is blessed with great technical ability and he can dictate the game with ease from midfield. His exuberant energy and ability to weave his way through the opposition defence has certainly caught the eye this season.

He could be on the periphery of the first team squad soon, with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer having proven he is not afraid to give youth a chance.

So perhaps, Hannibal Mejbri wearing the famous number seven is not that far-fetched.
