According to the latest reports, Ed Woodward will be unlikely to move for these two signings because of Manchester United’s failure with Alexis Sanchez.

In January 2018, Ed Woodward was beaming at Old Trafford. The Manchester United chief’s grin stretched as wide as the river Mersey. He puffed out his chest in a show of smug confidence.

One could hardly blame his brashness. The United chief pulled off what many regarded as one of the coups of the Premier League era by luring Alexis Sanchez to Old Trafford from arch rivals Arsenal and beating Manchester City in the process.

Sanchez would be the man who finally erased the lingering memories of Cristiano Ronaldo at Old Trafford. The man who would help Jose Mourinho’s title charge. He would be the catalyst to restore United’s dynasty in the Premier League.

United had paid a hefty price, offering Sanchez exorbitant wages in order to convince him to opt for the switch to the Red Devils.

But at the time many regarded it as a worthy sacrifice, considering Alexis Sanchez was one of the best players in the Premier League.

His prolific goalscoring prowess made him exactly the type of player United lacked.

Yet, in the end ultimately, both Woodward and United would end up scratching their heads.

Alexis Sanchez could not conjure the same sort of form he had enjoyed at Arsenal in a Red Devils shirt.

His time at Old Trafford has been a gargantuan failure so far.

Nonetheless, for Ed Woodward it might have been a significant learning curve.

United have been linked with players currently on high wages such Antoine Griezmann and Gareth Bale, however according to the Daily Express, Ed Woodward is unlikely to move for the pair of them because of his experience with Alexis Sanchez.

Griezmann and Bale, just like Sanchez when he moved to United, are nearing their thirties and their form will inevitably decline within the next few years.

By signing them Ed Woodward would only be draining United’s already hefty wage budget with little reward to show for it.

Thankfully, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has instilled a new mantra at United and the Norwegian has focused on buying talent for the future and establishing a long term philosophy at the club. It means United are unlikely to see yet another Sanchez debacle any time soon.
