Arch rivals could sign Manchester United’s ‘best’ defender

According to the latest reports Manchester United could lose their defender who has been dubbed ‘the best’ to their arch rivals.

Manchester United were once the ultimate team in the Premier League. At times they were invincible and held a hegemony.

Their status has fallen in recent times. Since Alex Ferguson departed the club, the Red Devils have struggled to fight themselves back into the reckoning.

Now the new man at the helm is desperate to change that. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer won plenty of Premier League titles and an ample amount of other trophies whilst serving the club as a player.

Now as a manager his task is far more strenuous.

In the South, a London club has taken a similar plight.

Arsenal were often United’s biggest rivals for the Premier League title during the era of Sir Alex Ferguson’s domination.

The two clubs were fierce competitors and their contests were mighty. The games between Arsenal and United were often the highlight of the Premier League season.

Now Arsenal, just like United, have fallen down the pecking order of English football.

In fact this season, the Gunner’s decline has been even more severe than that of United’s.

However it seems that despite the club’s fall, Arsenal could make a major signing from the Red Devils.

According to the Daily Express via the Daily Mail, the Gunners would be willing to meet the £25 million valuation of United’s Chris Smalling in the summer.

Red Devils legend, Rio Ferdinand recently dubbed Chris Smalling as the ‘best defender’ at United which was a shocking remark.

However, perhaps the statement isn’t that far fetched. Chris Smalling has been one of the top performers in the Serie A this season and has been earning many plaudits.

With United yet to find an ideal partner for Harry Maguire it is surprising that the Red Devils would be willing to let such a key asset leave.

On the other hand though, Chris Smalling has reached beyond his thirties and might not have many years left at the top. If United can get around £25 million for his services there certainly wouldn’t be any complaints, even if it would strengthen their arch rivals in Arsenal.
