According to the latest reports Manchester United could lose out to their arch rivals, Liverpool, in their pursuit of a top target.

The rivalry between Liverpool and Manchester United is as ancient as football itself. The two club’s have shared hostilities from the era of Matt Busby to the present day.

As well as being fought on the pitch, the rivalry often resurfaces in the transfer market. Being the two biggest clubs in English football and the world means the two side’s often target the same player.

That certainly seems to be the case with Timo Werner. The German and RB Leipzig forward has been linked with both the Red Devils and Liverpool.

However it seems according to the Daily Express that Liverpool have a ‘key advantage’ over Manchester United in securing the player ‘due to their strong relationship with Red Bull.’

The news will be a major blow to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer who has desperately tried to strengthen his attacking line over the past year since the departure of Romelu Lukaku.

In January he missed out on his former prodigy Erling Braut Haland who has found imperial form since rejecting the Red Devils and signing for Borussia Dortmund.

Manchester United were forced to make a panic move for Odion Ighalo instead and the Nigerian is yet to kick on.

Timo Werner would have been an ideal arrival at Old Trafford to fix Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s problems.

The German has the electric pace which would have been perfectly suited to Solskjaer’s counter attacking style of play.

Whilst playing for RB Leipzig Timo Werner has also proven his prolific nature and has established himself as one of the most feared strikers in Europe.

It will be a bitter blow for Manchester United if Werner decides to move to Anfield, especially because it will significantly strengthen a Liverpool side the Red Devils are desperately trying to catch up with.

One must hope, United can still put themselves ahead in the race for the forward.
