The player who has been described as Manchester United’s ‘best defender’ has given a major hint about his future at Old Trafford.

Manchester United are like a phoenix who has risen from the ashes. The club’s glory days are long behind them and they are now going through a period of rebirth.

At the end of the quest which the Red Devils have embarked upon is the ambition to rekindle the club’s former glory days. Manchester United aim to be back on the pinnacle of English football once again and to knock Liverpool off their perch, just like Sir Alex Ferguson had done in the past.

The man tasked with guiding the club through this unrelenting pursuit is a former protege of Sir Alex Ferguson in Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. The Norwegian experienced first hand some of the greatest triumphs orchestrated by Ferguson at Old Trafford and is now hoping to create his own.

Of course to fulfil that ambition, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer needs all the firepower he can get. Including a player who has been dubbed as the club’s ‘best defender’ by club legend Rio Ferdinand in the past.

The player in question is of course Chris Smalling who is currently on loan at AS Roma in Italy. Chris Smalling has really caught the eye during his time with AS Roma and has established himself as one of the best defenders in the league.

Smalling seems to have found a new burst of pace and technical ability and has thrived this season. He looks twice the player he was at the Red Devils and his new form could be a great asset when he returns to Old Trafford.

However according to reports, Chris Smalling might not even come back to United and could be staying put with AS Roma.

This report seems to have been confirmed by Chris Smalling himself, who said the following via Manchester Evening News:

"“I think the plan at the start of the season was to contribute as much as I can and then hopefully if we’ve all had a good season and hit our ambitions then those discussions [about staying at Roma] can take place,”"

The use of ‘hopefully’ by Chris Smalling may be a giveaway about the Englishman’s preference about his future and a blow to Manchester United.
