Manchester United could land former target on a free transfer
By Bence Bocsak
The former Manchester United target will be out of contract in the summer and it seems he is expected to be on the move in search of a new club.
Manchester United will be all too familiar with the unfortunate plight of wonderkids. The Red Devils have seen their fair share of overhyped young players at Old Trafford, catching the eye before dwindling away into obscurity. From the likes of Federico Macheda to Adnan Januzaj. The tale is all too frequent at the theatre of dreams.
Perhaps no player in the history of football has experienced that plight more than Mario Gotze.
The German midfielder went from scoring the winning goal at the World Cup to being cast out of the Bayern Munich side and suffering from weight problems in just the space of a few years.
At Borussia Dortmund Mario Gotze found redemption in his old boyhood club when he returned in 2016. The fans forgot his treacherous act of leaving the club for arch rivals Bayern Munich and welcomed him back with open arms.
As Mario Gotze’s weight problems resolved there were glimmers of the German midfielder returning back to his best form. In that period Manchester United were rumoured to be interested in his services.
Though that period did not last long and interest was deterred with the player preferring to stay at Dortmund.
However it seems Manchester United’s interest could be reignited as Mario Gotze is set to leave Dortmund when his contract expires this summer. According to German outlet Bild via the Daily MIrror, ‘there is no chance’ of Mario Gotze signing a contract extension at the club.
With Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s midfield problems well documented and with Manchester United having targeted Mario Gotze in the past it would not be surprising if the Red Devils made an attempt to bring the German to Old Trafford.
The deal is a no brainer after all. Mario Gotze is still just 27 years of age and he has been in decent form at Dortmund playing as a box to box or deep lying midfielder. This season even as a sporadic player he managed to score three goals in the Bundesliga in eleven games.
With Manchester United short of midfield options surely the addition of Mario Gotze would only bolster the club.
He is still a great player on his day and maybe at Old Trafford he could rekindle some of his form from his heyday.
What do you think would Mario Gotze be a good signing for Manchester United?
