Manchester United face Liverpool fight in wonderkid pursuit
By Bence Bocsak
Manchester United will be challenged by their arch rivals Liverpool in their pursuit to sign one of their long coveted wonderkids.
Not much separates the two gigantic Northern cities of Liverpool and Manchester apart from the river Mersey, yet when it comes to football they cannot be further apart. The reds of Liverpool despise the Red Devils of Manchester United and vice versa. It is a rivalry steeped in tradition and has been one of English football’s biggest derbies ever since the 1960s when Liverpool first emerged onto the scene as a firepower.
United long dominated the First Division thanks to Matt Busby prior to Liverpool’s arrival though since then dominion has been topsy-turvy between the two sides. In the 80s and 70s it was Liverpool, then in the 90s and 00s Manchester United took over the throne once more. Now in the 10s both clubs fell somewhat down the ladder. The 20s however could herald another Liverpool dominion if Manchester United do not act quickly.
Wonderkids are often labelled falsely. Some never fulfil the hype and it is always a risk to purchase one of them. Yet it is a risk that could be paid off in ten folds if they do fulfil their potential and the hype which surrounds them.
It is too early to tell which category Rayan Cherki of the French outfit Lyon falls into but nonetheless it seems big things are expected of the 16 year old. According to 90min.com Manchester United have been keeping tabs on the young French midfielder and could now be challenged in their pursuit with Liverpool having joined ‘the race.’
That will mean that not for the first time in history, the battle of Liverpool and Manchester United will be fought not on the football pitch but off it.
Rayan Cherki is a promising talent who has already made his debut for Lyon and scored for the first team in the French Cup. In addition he has played in Ligue One too and the Champions League.
He is set to be the next big thing to emerge out of France and whichever one of Liverpool or Manchester United lands the player could have a potentially world class talent on their hands.
What do you think could Manchester United beat Liverpool to the signing of Rayan Cherki?
