Manchester United: Solskjaer to let key player leave for free
By Bence Bocsak
The Manchester United boss could lose one of the club’s longest serving players on a free transfer with the player’s heart set for a departure.
Not many players have served Manchester United for almost an entire decade. That sort of commitment requires real talent and genuine ability. It is reserved for only some of the club’s biggest legends. Yet despite this Ashley Young is not considered by many to be on that list.
The current Manchester United captain has been at the club since the summer of 2011. He never truly settled at the Red Devils. Often his place in the team was dubious despite the promise and hype he arrived with. At the time Ashley Young was considered as one of the best wingers in the Premier League. He was remarkable at Aston Villa scoring goals and assisting on a regular basis. At Manchester United that form was never reached. There were glimmers and some false hopes but Ashley Young was mostly mediocre.
He ends his almost decade spell with the club as no longer a promising winger but an ageing full back. Ashley Young has not had the impact many expected of him at United. He hasn’t been the Ronaldo replacement the fans desperately wanted. He has been a somewhat average squad player. Yet he has been a loyal servant to the club. Someone who has committed to United and who has been through the club’s ups and downs no matter what. He has even reverted to a full back role to continue playing at Old Trafford which is a testament to his character.
Nonetheless, his time at the club must come to an end eventually and that time could be upon him soon. According to the Daily Mail Ashley Young is on the verge of departing Old Trafford and ‘in advanced’ talks with Inter Milan over a free transfer once his contract expires in the summer.
Ashley Young has fallen down the pecking order at Old Trafford and he is not playing regularly anymore. Perhaps it is time for the club to say their farewells.
What do you think should Manchester United let Ashley Young leave on a free transfer?
