David de Gea signs new contract at Manchester United!

Manchester United have confirmed David de Gea has signed a new contract with the club until 2023 with an option to extend for a further year. Here are all the details.

The club announced this afternoon at 3:00 PM local time that De Gea has agreed to a new long-term deal with only eight months left on his current deal. Now he will be at Manchester United until at least 2023, possibly 2024, spanning his tenure at the club to 13 years.

Leading up to the announcement, there had been a number of rumours circulating that the Spaniard was close to agreeing to a new contract.

Firstly, this time last week The Guardian believed the keeper was due to earn as much as Paul Pogba does per week, £290,000. And then, yesterday, the Mirror released an exclusive revealing De Gea had chosen to stay at Old Trafford rather than seek a move abroad.

Confirming the announcement on social media, Manchester United posted a classy and simple video entitled, “This is his home.”

De Gea posted the same video with a slightly different title, “There’s no place like home ❤” followed by another tweet describing his emotions accompanied by a picture of him signing the dotted line.

The Spanish number one gave a longer statement on the club’s website, as did manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer who said De Gea was the, “best in the world”.

"“I am delighted that David has committed his long-term future to the club. Over recent years, David has proved himself to be the best in the world and a vital part of our plans as we look to take Manchester United back to where it belongs. David is a fantastic person and his outstanding quality provides the perfect base to our defence.”"

De Gea said it was a “privilege” to re-sign and mentioned his desire to try to win more silverware with the club, having suffered a two-year drought.

"“It has been a privilege to spend eight years at this great club and the opportunity to continue my career at Manchester United is a genuine honour. Since I arrived here, I could never have imagined I would play over 350 games for this club. Now my future is fixed, all I want is to help this team achieve what I believe we can and win trophies again, together.”"

So it appears De Gea is very happy to be staying at United and both Solskjaer and the fans are very pleased he is too.

Perhaps it is looking more and more likely that he will finish his career at the Theatre of Dreams, if not, go a long way to it. Assuming he does stay at the club for the full five years he could overtake Alex Stepney’s record of appearances for goalkeepers at the club of 539.

De Gea wants to be here, but, as he said in his statement, his desire is to win trophies once again.
