Manchester United continue to look for options in the transfer market ahead of the new season and the search for a striker is becoming more and more necessary as the days pass. Ben Yedder is allegedly on the brink of joining the club, here’s why it would make sense to sign him.
Wissam Ben Yedder is a striker for Sevilla with a great track record for goals. Something Manchester United clearly lacked last campaign.
Paul Pogba was the club’s top scorer with 16 goals in all competitions last season, with Romelu Lukaku (15), Marcus Rashford (13) and Anthony Martial (12) were the only others to hit double figures.
Whilst Lukaku had a good first season at Old Trafford, netting 27 goals in 51 games, last campaign he didn’t live up to expectation and the team’s mobility and dynamism were improved immensely with Rashford up top.
If Rashford is going to be the main front man next season, United will need to sign a replacement for Lukaku. However, one who will know they won’t be first choice but would have to step up given the opportunity.
His record for Sevilla shows his undoubted ability to find the back of the net on a regular basis. After making his name at Toulouse from 2010 to 2016, he signed for the La Liga club and has been there for the past three seasons.
He scored 18 goals in his first season, 22 in his second and last season netted 30 times in 54 appearances giving him a goal ratio of one in every 177 minutes.
But, interestingly he is not always a regular for Sevilla. Last season he completed a full match in only 29 of his 54 appearances. This would mean Ben Yedder may not be against the idea of becoming United’s next Solskjaer or Chicharito in that he makes more of an impact off the bench or in cup competitions.
Another reason for United fans to appreciate Ben Yedder before he even potentially arrives at Old Trafford is because last season, after coming from behind from 3-0 down to draw with Liverpool 3-3, the Frenchman poked fun at the English club.
Singing Ben Yedder would go against United’s new transfer policy this summer. The arrivals of Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Daniel James suggest Solskjaer is demanding to target young, hungry and British players. Whilst it’s a policy I completely endorse, it would be narrow-minded for the club not to consider a player further afield who would benefit the team as much.
If United were to look closer to home, a player such as Callum Wilson would be a great addition. Someone who could come off the bench when Rashford fatigued and provide that same energy. But the prices you pay for English talent are at a premium.
Take Wan-Bissaka and Dalot for example. The pair were signed one-year apart with similar hype about their potential. The Premier League player cost £50 million whereas the Porto defender cost just £19 million.
Ben Yedder could be exactly what United need and at a good price too.
