Will Daniel James play on the right for Manchester United?
By Ali Akbar
Manchester United have confirmed the signing of Daniel James from Swansea City. But which position will the young forward play in?
Daniel James has joined Manchester United from Swansea City on a five-year contract with an option to extend for a further year.
The 21-year-old enjoyed a breakthrough campaign in the 2018-19 Championship season, scoring four goals and registering nine assists.
Although James can play anywhere across the front line, he primarily played on the left wing for Swansea last season, grabbing almost all of his goals and assists from that position.
However, United already have three first-team players who prefer to play in that position also – Anthony Martial, Marcus Rashford and Alexis Sanchez.
Although these three can also play as strikers, Romelu Lukaku will likely start up top for the Red Devils in the Premier League next season, should he decide to stay at the club.
Does this mean that United still haven’t solved their problem at right wing? Maybe.
James is only the first of many signings that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is going to make this summer. This means that he could be planning on signing an out-and-out right winger as well to start alongside the Wales international.
This could be part of a complete overhaul of our front line, which would see James play on the left, either Lukaku or Rashford down the middle, and a new signing on the right.

However, I don’t think that this will be our set-up next season. First of all, this would leave Martial and Sanchez as mere bench players – which neither of them will take kindly to.
Second of all, there are many other areas of the squad that also desperately need strengthening this summer. If Solskjaer spends big on a shiny new right winger, will Ed Woodward grant him enough funds to sign a new right-back, centre-back and a central midfielder as well? I doubt it.
Instead, I think James will end up playing on the right for United next season, with Solskjaer alternating between Martial and Sanchez on the left. I wish this wasn’t the case, but the reality is that our board is far too stingy when it comes to money.
If this still doesn’t solve our right wing problem, Solskjaer may have to sell one or two of his left wingers to make way for a truly right-sided player.
