Manchester United interested in signing Eric Dier from Tottenham Hotspur?

Reports suggest that Manchester United want to replace Nemanja Matic with Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Eric Dier this summer.
Manchester United are eyeing a move for Tottenham Hotspur’s Eric Dier as a replacement for Nemanja Matic, according to reports.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is looking to revamp his squad in the summer transfer window after a disappointing end to the season, which saw the Red Devils miss out on a top-four finish.
Matic was among the players who were heavily criticised for their performances last season, and with Ander Herrera having already left the club, United will need to add reinforcements to strengthen the midfield ahead of the 2019-20 campaign.
According to The Times, Dier is on “a list of candidates” who could potentially “fill the holding midfield role” after Matic has been dropped from the side.

The 25-year-old has had a difficult season for Tottenham, making only 20 appearances in the Premier League due to injury.
Even when the England international was fit, Spurs manager Mauricio Pochettino preferred to play the likes of Harry Winks and Moussa Sissoko in midfield, suggesting that the club are indeed open to letting Dier go – even to a Premier League rival.
However, Dier isn’t the only defensive midfielder in the league whose situation United are monitoring, as The Times reports that West Ham United’s Declan Rice was also on their list of potential signings this summer.
Nevertheless, it is believed that Tottenham are more open to doing business with United than West Ham, as Rice is expected to have a more important role for the Hammers next season.
The same report suggests that Solskjaer is also interested in signing Newcastle United’s Sean Longstaff, although this transfer will likely be “one for the future”.
United have already confirmed one addition this summer after they announced they had reached an agreement with Swansea City to sign 21-year-old winger Daniel James, which should be completed next week.
