Italian footballing legend Gianluigi Buffon has announced on social media that he will be leaving Paris Saint-Germain, not returning for a second season at the club next campaign.

The news on the club website was partnered with a statement from Buffon himself, who wrote a heartfelt message on his Instagram page.

Italy’s famous shot-stopper was offered a new deal by PSG, however, he turned it down. Buffon said he wanted a fresh start and his decision was, “driven by the desire to prepare myself for new experiences and new professional challenges.”

"“Thank you all for everything I have had the opportunity to experience in Paris. Thank you for the emotions that we have shared together. Twelve months ago, I arrived at Paris Saint-Germain filled with enthusiasm, welcomed by the incredible warmth of the fans. It was really moving. Thank you, once again, from the bottom of my heart. I leave happy to have enjoyed this experience which has undoubtedly helped me to grow.” [en.PSG.fr]"

In all competitions, Buffon played 25 times for the French champions. In his time with the club, he won the Ligue 1 title and the Trophée des Champions in 2018. But now, PSG will be on the lookout for a new first-class keeper.

Why should this worry Manchester United fans?

David de Gea. Not much more needs to be said on the issue. It seems as though every year for the past five the club have been desperately trying to keep hold of De Gea and one of these days we will have to say goodbye.

It’s usually been a tug of war with Real Madrid. However, they have settled with Keylor Navas and more recently Thibaut Courtois over the past couple of few seasons.

The biggest threat this season looked to be coming from Buffon’s old club, Juventus. Wojciech Szczesny, who is Juve’s number one, was a sporadic choice at Arsenal for eight years. And if they are to go on and win the Champions League, the big fish, they may also look at De Gea as their much-needed world-class keeper.

But, with the latest developments regarding Buffon, it seems the paths are all leading in the same direction. Not only are PSG also looking to win the Champions League as soon as possible, they too are now in need of a top goalkeeper. Chairman Nasser Al-Khelaïfi would have no problems paying De Gea’s transfer fee or £300,000-plus weekly wages.

Another, more sentimental point of view, is that one of De Gea’s best mates has just moved to PSG. YES, as much as we loved Ander Herrera at Manchester United, he is now a PSG player and I am sure he will be doing everything he can to try to convince De Gea to join him in crossing the channel.
