Ole Gunnar Solskjaer must find his system at Manchester United before the start of next season

Manchester United have struggled to field a consistent starting XI for some time now. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer must pick one before the start of next season and stick to it.

When Ole Gunnar Solskjaer first arrived at Manchester United as caretaker manager, he had seemed to find his best starting XI right away.

In his first game in charge, United thrashed Cardiff City 5-1 using a midfield three of Paul Pogba, Nemanja Matic and Ander Herrera, with Marcus Rashford playing up top.

Solskjaer proceeded to take his side on a six-game win streak in the Premier League – a joint managerial record he shares with Pep Guardiola at Manchester City and Antonio Conte at Chelsea.

Things began to falter for the Red Devils soon after this period, forcing the boss to begin chopping and changing his team more frequently in hopes of getting back to winning ways.

However, United never managed to regain their form from Solskjaer’s early period at Old Trafford, and they ended up crashing out of the FA Cup and the Champions League and finishing 6th in the Premier League.

Although you could argue that Solskjaer was right to switch his players around, I think part of the problem why United struggled in the final third of the season was the loss of stability caused by this.

Over the summer, Solskjaer needs to assess his players and identify his best team ahead of next season. He’ll have to take into account ingoing and outgoing transfers, of course, but once he is happy with the players he has at the club, he needs to make a decent XI out of them and stick to it.

Unfortunately, with Herrera departing this window, Solskjaer needs to find a central midfielder to replace him either from within the squad or elsewhere in the market.

He’ll also need to decide once and for all who his first-choice striker will be at the club. Is Rashford the right man to lead the line next season? Or does £75million Romelu Lukaku need to be the main man at Old Trafford?

These are the difficult questions Solskjaer needs to ask himself during the break, and once he has made his decisions, he’ll need to stick to a system to ensure that United can go into next season with some stability in their set-up.
