Manchester United held their end of season awards on Thursday night after what has been a shocking season for the club. Not only did they sack Jose Mourinho in December, but after a brief pick up of results, performances have seemed to hit a lull again with serious questions being asked of the current crop of players. Despite this, some of them were handed awards on Thursday evening, read on to find out who.
There were six awards up for grabs on the night. The Jimmy Murphy Young Player of the Year and the Denzil Haroun Reserve Team Player of the Year recognising the outstanding individuals in the varied youth set ups.
After the inaugural Manchester United Women’s campaign, a Women’s Player of the Season was awarded to match, voted for by the fans.
The Goal of the Season title was given to the male or female who produced the best strike of the season.
Moving onto the two awards given to the cream of the crop of the men’s senior side, the players get to vote for who they believe has been their best United colleague. And the fans get a say to crowing the Sir Matt Busby Player of the Year.
Jimmy Murphy Young Player of the Year
No prizes for guessing who picked up this award. Mason Greenwood was outstanding for Manchester United’s youth teams this season.
The 17-year old scored 30 goals this campaign for the various age groups. He started off in the under-18s, before moving up an age group to the 19s, and as if that wasn’t enough, Greenwood jumped up to the reserve team.
His ability is unquestionable, especially given 15 of his goals were scored with his right foot, 14 with his left and one with his head. The youngster has displayed a wide variety of talent in goalscoring situations at three different age groups.
Greenwood has also made three first-team appearances… and he was only 16 when the season began!
