Manchester United have just announced that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has been appointed the permanent manager of Manchester United. He held his first press conference this afternoon in the new title and the Norwegian made it clear, “we will do some business this summer”.  But who should he sign? I look at which positions United need to strengthen in and which individuals could fit the bill.

As the season nears to an end, transfer speculation ramps up and as ever Manchester United are at the forefront of press reports and breaking news stories. But trimming away all the nonsense, who will United be targetting this summer?

It’s still March and potential summer transfer stories are breaking all the time. It’s difficult to really know what to believe at this point.

And it’s not just been players coming in to Manchester United that have been grabbing the headlines. Numerous reports suggest Ander Herrera and Juan Mata are struggling to agree terms on new deals and therefore could leave.

Judging by reports so far it suggests Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and his management staff believe three or four players will be enough to guide United back to the summit of the Premier League or challenging for the title at least.

A centre-half and right winger seem to be the common denominators in the reports but other positions such as right-back, central midfield and a backup striker also have got reoccurring mentions.

In my view, the key positions are in central defence, central midfield and on the right wing. And fans will remember similar comments being made prior to Jose Mourinho arriving at the club in 2016.

The Portuguese-man tried to resolve the issue by signing Eric Bailly, Nemanja Matic and Henrikh Mkhitaryan. And at first, they all appeared to be great additions.

Unfortunately, Bailly has proved to be very inconsistent both on the pitch and on the treatment table. Mkhitaryan was a player who started brightly but spiralled out of form very suddenly and a quick potentially rash call was made to swap him for Alexis Sanchez. With regards to Matic, we always knew he would only be able to last a few seasons and United need to start thinking about future replacements.

The fact we are in this position, having to replace the men who were doing the replacing such a short time ago, provides a glimpse of the poor recruitment at the club over the past few years.
