International roundup: Paul Pogba shines once again as France cruise to win!
By Ollie Slack
Over the last two days, Manchester United’s finest were once again on the world stage battling it out for their countries. And with only three more fixtures involving international reds to come, Ollie Slack provides you with the latest update.
On Sunday, whilst many Scotland fans settled down on their sofas after a traditional roast, Manchester United’s Scott McTominay was settling down on the bench for his countries match against San Marino.
He and his teammates came into the match with immense pressure on their shoulders. A 3-0 loss against Kazakhstan only days before meant Scots across the land were ready to pick apart anything other than a comfortable high-scoring win.
It was a perfect start. Alex McLeish must have blown a sigh of relief as his side opened the scoring in the fourth minute. However, Scotland found the second goal hard to come by.
McTominay was introduced in the 57th minute and started to make an impact by getting in the ball in between San Marino’s midfield and defence.
Eventually, Jonny Russel doubled Scotland’s lead and it could have been more as the match neared its conclusion. That didn’t stop the travelling fans from booing the players off the pitch at the full-time whistle.
Fabulous France!
Last night France made it two wins from two in their opening pair of fixtures in the Euro 2020 qualifying. After defeating Moldova 4-1 on Friday evening they thrashed Iceland by a similar scoreline of 4-0 yesterday.
Paul Pogba once again shone in the middle of the park, playing a vital role in France’s final two goals. Samuel Umtiti and Olivier Giroud scored the opening two goals but the United star assisted both assists to make it three and four-nil.
Antoine Greizman slipped in Kylian Mbappe to poke the ball home before the PSG forward returned the favour with a smart backheel into the path of Greizman, who dinked the ball over the onrushing keeper and into the net.
The win caps off a great week for France who have taken maximum points from their opening two Euro 2020 qualifying games, scoring an impressive eight goals.
No team has scored more, other than England, who defeated Montenegro 5-1 last night, after a 5-0 win at Wembley on Friday versus the Czech Republic.
What’s still to come?
Three more Manchester United internationals could be in action today.
Eric Bailly could be rested for Ivory Coast’s friendly against Liberia after the centre half suffered a nasty head clash on Saturday against Rwanda.
However, David de Gea is expected to start versus Malta as Spain look to match France and England in having a 100 per cent record in their Euro 2020 qualifiers.
And finally, Antonio Valencia could feature for Ecuador when they play Honduras in a friendly. The United club captain did manage a whole 90 minutes on Thursday though.
