Reports suggest that Manchester United are the club most likely to sign Tottenham Hotspur centre-back Toby Alderweireld in the summer.

Manchester United are in “the front of the queue” in the race to sign Tottenham Hotspur centre-back Toby Alderweireld, according to reports.

Former United manager Jose Mourinho wanted to sign the centre-back last summer but was unable to secure the necessary funds from his board.

It is understood that caretaker manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will have a say in potential transfers this summer regardless of whether or not he stays on in a permanent capacity.

The Mirror reports that Tottenham are “resigned” to losing Alderweireld in the summer and will allow him to join United for a fee of £26 million.

The 30-year-old only has a year left on his contract and is refusing to sign a new deal, so it is thought that his club would rather sell him to a rival now than let him go for free next season.

United have struggled defensively this season, having shipped 40 goals in 30 games so far in the Premier League, and are eager to make reinforcements to their backline.

However, the Red Devils are not the only European powerhouse interested in signing the Belgium international, as Barcelona and Juventus are also keen on strengthening their defensive options.

Nevertheless, Old Trafford appears to be Alderweireld’s preferred destination as he would like to remain in England.

Although the summer transfer window opens soon after the end of the season, it is understood that the Spurs defender can only leave during the final two weeks of the window, due to a clause in his contract.
