3 things learned as Manchester United dispatch Chelsea 2-0 in FA Cup

Manchester United’s strongest centre-back pairing unite
Solskjaer faced a really tough call against Chelsea. Which centre-half should play alongside Victor Lindelof against Chelsea? Eric Bailly played last time out against PSG and didn’t cover himself in glory when Kylian Mbappe netted. Phil Jones had been solid when played against lesser opponents. And finally, Chris Smalling had recently returned from injury against Fulham nine days ago.
The United interim boss, correctly, in my opinion, opted for Smalling. Up against a physical presence in Gonzalo Higuain, Smalling was terrific. The six foot four defender seems to thrive against the bigger opponents, recently dealing with the hot-headed Aleksandar Mitrovic very well.
I can only remember one clear opening that Higuain managed to muster on Monday – a header which flashed wide of the post in the first half, after losing Smalling after the cross. Other than that it was business as usual for the United centre-back.
And it was clear to see what a formidable understanding both Smalling and Lindelof have built up together over the last couple of seasons. Most of the Swede’s league appearances have come alongside the Englishman and for me, they provide the most balance and composure to The Red Devil’s defence and are the best at the club.
