Mason Greenwood is close to making his Manchester United debut, says Ole Gunnar Solskjaer

Manchester United fans may not have to wait much longer for Mason Greenwood to make his first-team debut, according to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has said that Mason Greenwood is “knocking at the door” with regards to making his Manchester United debut.

Greenwood has netted a whopping 24 goals in just 20 matches for United’s Under-18s, Under-19s and Under-23s sides this season.

The 17-year-old was named on the bench by Jose Mourinho earlier in the season in the Champions League away clash against Valencia, which ended in defeat, but he did not make an appearance.

The young striker, along with his fellow youth teammates Tahith Chong and Angel Gomes, has had numerous first-team training opportunities under Solskjaer, and even joined the squad in their warm-weather training session in Dubai recently.

In a pre-match press conference, the caretaker manager had this to say about the youngster’s chances of playing for the first team:

"“There are quite a few young kids coming through. Jimmy Garner was there [in Dubai], Mason, Chongy and Gomes. So there are players there coming through. Mason is one of them.“You’ve got to remember that he’s only 17. He’s knocking on the door to get his first appearance and they’ve got a Youth Cup game against Brighton this coming week [on Monday] as well.” [MEN]"

It appears that Solskjaer is keen to familiarise United’s youth players with the first-team setup, but he is reluctant to throw them into the deep end just yet.

This is a smart move, as rushing players such as Greenwood into the first team could have an adverse effect on their development as players.

Still, we’d like to see the England youth international get his debut soon, as Chong and Gomes have already been given some minutes under Solskjaer.

Could we see Greenwood make his debut against Brighton and Hove Albion this afternoon? It’s unlikely, but it’s good to know that even if he doesn’t make his debut just yet it is nevertheless still right around the corner…

Should Ole Gunnar Solskjaer hand Mason Greenwood his debut now? Or would you prefer if he waited until the young striker is 100 per cent ready? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below!
