SUGGESTED STARTING XIs: Manchester United get FA Cup underway vs Reading

Manchester United look to avoid the banana skin of Championship side Reading in the first round of the FA Cup tomorrow lunchtime. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has won all four of his first games in charge of the side so far and the FA Cup presents itself as a realistic trophy the club can win this season, so will the Norwegian look to make changes or field another strong XI?

Since we’re playing at home to a side who are 23rd in the Championship, we should be fine fielding a second-string side along with some youngsters.

Marcos Rojo would have played had it not been for his injury, therefore Phil Jones and Victor Lindelof pair up again. Diogo Dalot also deserves an opportunity as he has struggled to gain a place in the starting XI this season.

Our midfield three of Paul Pogba, Nemanja Matic and Ander Herrera has been phenomenal under Solskjaer, but they must be rested ahead of the game against Tottenham, so we should play our next three best midfielders: Andreas Pereira, Scott McTominay and Fred.

Tahith Chong and Mason Greenwood are huge youth prospects from the academy and now would be the perfect time to hand them their first-team debuts. Juan Mata should start alongside them to balance things out with his experience.

With Manchester United in first round FA Cup action, there is always a tendency to chuck in the youngsters and rest your star men. However, you have to try and find that balance to ensure you still win the game. Luckily for United though, two of their star man are returning from injury and it seems as though Solskjaer is keen to start both Lukaku and Sanchez.

Sergio Romero comes in for me to give him some minutes. Diogo Dalot and Luke Shaw should be given another opportunity at hopefully demonstrating what the future holds for United in the full-back positions. And with Marcos Rojo, Chris Smalling and Eric Bailly all out, I would hand former under-18s captain Ro-Shaun Williams his debut. The 20-year old was involved in the clubs preseason tour this season and has more recently been called up to first team training by Solskjaer.

I was tempted to add more solidity to my midfield with a calm head such as Nemanja Matic but have taken the risk to select a two-man midfield of Scott McTominay and Andreas Pereira. The pair hasn’t played as much as they would have liked this season but have shown glimpses of their quality since stepping up to the first team.

Angel Gomes also gets his first senior start in my XI alongside the more experienced threesome of Juan Mata, Alexis Sanchez and Romelu Lukaku who are guaranteed to create chances.

This team could look vulnerable on the counter-attack tomorrow especially with the two in midfield, however, if the front four are firing then an early goal could ensure Reading are in for a hiding.
