WHO SHOULD BE NEXT? Manchester United sack Jose Mourinho, but RDA writers have their say on next manager!

Manchester United today sacked manager Jose Mourinho, the clubs third manager since 2013. So we asked our Red Devil Armada site experts to pick who they want next to sit in the dugout at Old Trafford.

Manchester United announced earlier today they will appoint a “caretaker manager” until the end of this season. However, Sky Sources have reported that it will be an external appointment meaning it will be neither Michael Carrick or Kieran McKenna. The pair are expected to lead training over the next 48 hours.

Personally, I don’t understand it. If you are not going to head hunt your next permanent boss now and want to wait until the end of the season, allowing someone else to take charge during that spell, it seems daft to bring in another new face to do so.

Perhaps Woodward is hoping a more experienced body can produce a miracle and lift United into the Champions League spots but that is almost a lost cause. Therefore, why not give the experience to Michael Carrick and Kieran McKenna who could use it as valuable time to gain minutes in the dugout as first-team managers.

Once again, it seems Woodward is approaching the situation with a very short-term and commercial driven mindset. However, interestingly, there are reports claiming Manchester United’s Chief Executive does want to bring in someone who understands the club’s philosophy. Maybe Ferguson has had his say!

Heading up the odds is club legend and Champions League winner Ole Gunnar Solskjaer at 15/8, followed by Laurent Blanc 5/2, Michael Carrick 4/1, Zinedine Zidane 4/1 and Mauricio Pochettino at 14/1. To be clear, even caretaker managers who complete more than 10 games in charge will be deemed permanent, so don’t be surprised to see Pochettino’s odds reduced come to the end of the season.

Gary Neville thinks Pochettino is the man

Manchester United legend Gary Neville had his say on who he thinks should be next Manchester United boss, plumping for Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino. Neville claimed the Spurs boss is the “perfect fit“.

Thanks for bringing some stability back to the club, Mourinho, but now it’s time to see how well an attacking manager could do with our promising young talent. On a short-term basis, we could see someone like the ex-United player and ex-PSG manager Laurent Blanc come in to steady the ship until the end of the season. In the long-term, however, the club will probably be eyeing more a more accomplished manager, such as Zinedine Zidane or Antonio Conte perhaps.

“I’d give it to Michael Carrick and Kieran McKenna until the end of the season to give them experience in the job potentially prepping them for a future role at the club. And in the long-term United need a man with a plan, a project in mind. Woodward has to ditch this short-term and purely brand-based approach. We need a manager who has a style of play that delivers attacking modern day football, trusts young players, and if given the time can produce winning football to compete with Man City and Liverpool for the next half a decade. I’d be going for either Marcucio Pochettino or if Woodward really is willing to invest in someone for a long period, Eddie Howe.“
