Diogo Dalot, Juan Mata shine for Manchester United in win over Fulham at Old Trafford
Manchester United earned their biggest win of the campaign in a commanding 4-1 win vs Fulham this Saturday.
There has been plenty of disappointment about Manchester United’s season so far as they sat 8th before the win.
Now in 6th and after an enthralling win, United faithful will be hoping that this will catapult the team onwards towards successive victories.
After consecutive 2-2 draws against lowly Southhampton last weekend and Arsenal midweek, United needed the full 3 points today.
A victory against Fulham is nothing to boast about but confidence is high after United picked up their biggest win of the season.
The attacking flow was brilliant as the forwards connected on some fantastic link-up play. Supported by some energetic play from the fullbacks of Dalot and Young, United looked like a team in full control right from the get-go.
That is something not regularly seen at United lately as the first goal is normally conceded by United early on.
Defensively, United have struggled this season and with the goal they conceded against Fulham, they are now the only team in the top 15 to have allowed more goals in the first half of the season than they did for the entire campaign last year.
That total is 26 goals allowed. Something of a head turner if you knew that David De Gea was the keeper at Old Trafford.
Mourinho has always prided himself on working hard to solidify the back defensively. That just hasn’t worked for United though and it is clear that the defence just isn’t good enough.
The bright spot is the emergence of youngster Diogo Dalot. After a shaky start against Arsenal, Dalot really came into the game with the support of veterans Ashley Young and Juan Mata.
On just his second Premier League start, Dalot was confident enough to race forward whenever he got a chance. His final ball could be better, but that will come with experience. Mourinho’s claim that United have found their right-back for the next 10 years might prove to be right
United produced a full display today that is something that used to be on par for the course at Old Trafford. Opponents felt like they were lucky to get a corner and the goal scored was from a soft penalty call involving Herrera sweeping the ball out from the box to only get wrongly called for a foul.
Attacking wise, United always look a threat. Silky link-up play from Lukaku to Rashford on the left side where he placed cut back ball towards Juan Mata as he slid the ball with grace into the back of the net for United’s second goal.
Lukaku even broke his 9-month goal drought with a nice tap-in from a good string of build-up play before Radford capped off the afternoon with a rocket of a shot from outside the box.
A fully deserved goal and a fully deserved win for Manchester United. No fear from here on out is what United need to get this season back on track.
