Marcus Rashford turned 21 this week so I decided to look back at all of his goals for Manchester United so far and whittle down his best ones into a top five.
It was a very tough decision, with Rashford scoring some big goals in some big games against the likes of Manchester City, Liverpool, Arsenal and Chelsea. He has scored a wide variety of goals too from outside the box belters to tidy finishes inside the box.
The difficulty of the selection process was whether or not the occasion outweighed the quality of the strike or vice versa. However, I feel I’ve managed to pick a top five which includes all types of goals against a broad range of opponents.
Before we get started, there’s one thing left to say, Happy Birthday Marcus!
5: vs FC Midtjylland (H) – Europa League Last 32 – 25th February 2016
A game Manchester United had to win. Trailing Midtjlland 2-1 from the previous leg in Switzerland, Louis Van Gaal was staring at a exiting the Europa League having already been dropped down from Europe’s elite competition.
To compound Van Gaal’s misery inform forward Anthony Martial had got injured in the warm-up meaning 18-year old Marcus Rashford, who had not made a senior appearance for the club at the time had to fill the Frenchman’s shoes.
It’s tempting to write, “and the rest is history”, but I might as well explain. Marcus Rashford was fearless from minute one. It was a joy to witness a Manchester United youth product, fan and local lad enjoy gracing the Old Trafford turf as much as he did.
The first entry into my top five Marcus Rashford goals is by no means his best, but perhaps his most significant. It’s his first ever goal for Manchester United.
