2. Jose Gimenez (Atletico Madrid)

The Uruguayan centre-back has impressed scouts with his quality performances both for club and country. He was one of the stalwarts of the Uruguay side in the 2018 world cup which managed to keep a clean sheet in all 3 group games. He also chipped in with a crucial goal as he netted a late winner in the first game against Egypt.

Born in Toledo and playing his early career days in Uruguay, Gimenez was signed by Atletico for a sum of €900,000 back in 2013 and has stayed as one of the main men in the excellent backline of the Spanish capital club who have kept more clean sheets than the number of goals conceded since 2015.

Atletico manager Diego Simeone has always rated him highly and has convinced him to stay with the Los Rojiblancos despite interest from the Red Devils in summer. At 23 years old, he is one of the most experienced young player having rubbed shoulders for quite a long time with a world class defender like Diego Godin, while representing both club and country.

Gimenez’s success in aerial duels and ground duels make him one of the most matured and promising defenders in world football. He is also a major aerial threat from set pieces and would chip in with the odd goal occasionally.

Gimenez would be a great signing with the future in mind to strengthen the defence. United are favourites to land Toby Alderweireld next summer on a free transfer and a centre-back pairing of Gimenez and Toby Alderweireld would easily be one of the most feared in the league. That said, the board will be keen to sign the Uruguayan keeping the future in mind.
