Defensive Attitude

Jose Mourinho’s style of play is one which fans and ex-players have criticised a great deal, the Portuguese’s defensive tactics and a wary attitude towards games has come under fire more frequently this campaign.

Man United Legend, Eric Cantona voiced out his concern over Mourinho and United’s defensive attitude back in 2017. According to Goal, the Frenchman said:

"“He is playing in this defensive way which is not the identity of Manchester United.” He also added, “United are my club. They are my blood more than my club, but if I watch a game today I prefer more creative games.”"

Another Frenchman who famously expressed a similar statement after the 1-1 draw against Wolverhampton Wanderers was none other than Paul Pogba. He told Sport360: “When we’re at home we should attack, attack, attack. That’s Old Trafford. We’re here to attack.” He echoed the cry of millions of United fans all around the globe. But that statement lead to the infamous falling out with the manager who reportedly stripped him of the vice-captaincy.

Mourinho and the players need to understand that defensive football is not the conventional Man United system. One of the primary reasons for the club’s monumental success back in Sir Alex’s glory days was the attacking brand of football which United continuously played over two decades, but since the Scot’s unfortunate retirement, fans have missed the trademark attacking style of football.

Mourinho also needs to know that his favoured ‘Park the Bus’ strategy is the complete opposite of entertaining football. Fans have been left frustrated with such tactics numerous times in the past.

Former United Midfield maestro Paul Scholes didn’t hold back and launched a series of attacks on Mourinho expressing his anger over the manager’s attitude and the “boring” style of football.

"“The last year has been dull to watch. I don’t know how many times we’ve sat in this studio watching games and we end up watching the other screens, looking at the other games, trying to find some goals. He’s(Mourinho) coming out in press conferences, he’s constantly having a go at players, he’s having a go at people above him because he’s not getting what he wants and I think his mouth is probably out of control and I think he’s embarrassing the club.” [Manchester Evening news]"

A change of this defensive attitude is desperately needed for this great club.
