After a tricky week for Manchester United, Jose Mourinho, the players and not least the fans, learning from last weeks defeat to Brighton and turning things around against Spurs could kick-start their season.

Football fans come in varied types, some fans prioritize winning as an absolute must, some prioritize style of play and some prioritize value for money and time they invest in. Manchester United fans now must be falling in the final category right now.

Fans know that Manchester United have lots of individual talent who are capable of winning against the best of the sides. On the flip side, they are also aware that their team lacks the chemistry and focus in order to become a team dominating in the Premier League week in and week out.

Turning up on matchday, fans are unsure as to what kind of performance and Manchester United side they will see. Leaving fans demanding that the side they pay to watch plays pretty football with a better temperament as opposed to winning at an absolute must.

A club the size of Manchester United’s size, history and culture must prioritize winning over anything else. However, last week’s result and the alleged public rift between stand-in captain Paul Pogba and Jose Mourinho over the Frenchman’s attitude has left a sour taste and reminder for the fans.

Fans like myself expect better from the players and Jose Mourinho. The attitude of these proven international players is unacceptable, as is the negative approach from Jose Mourinho in terms of tactics.

Paul Pogba needs to up his game after World Cup success

Paul Pogba has the potential to become a world-class player. But he needs to prove that he is worth the hype and hoopla. He needs to take inspiration from players such as Messi and Ronaldo who have dragged their teams over the finish line when the original tactics have failed.

Pogba needs to inspire his players on and off the pitch; something which he did in France’s World Cup win. If he is able to drag this United team anywhere close to the summit of being Premier League Champions, he will be well deserving of any accolades he dreams of achieving.

Where else do Manchester United need to improve ahead of the Spurs clash?

United’s main centre-halves Bailly and Lindelof need to quickly learn the lesson from the defeat against Brighton last week by moving on by remembering the strengths they are capable of.

Mourinho and his staff including legendary Michael Carrick need to work on the temperament of Brazilian duo Fred and Andreas Perreira, who despite being naturally gifted, went missing last Sunday. Nemanja Matic being back in training will be a positive for Mourinho who can set his side up knowing that he has a reliable player such as Matic to carry it out to perfection.

The pressure from the press on Mourinho

Much has been written and talked about Mourinho this week. Even rumours suggesting he will be axed soon, however paying attention to gossip is not going to help anyone in this circumstance. Mourinho needs to focus on developing a positive culture amongst the team in order to bring the best out of his talented individuals and turn them into a group of winners.

The Portuguese-man needs to be careful not to be too harsh on the culprits from the last match. He needs to trust his players to have self introspection to rectify their mistakes and become better players.

Games as those against Tottenham who are a fine side playing with a philosophy challenging any side in the league. United players must remember how this Tottenham team have outplayed them on a number of previous occasions; not just in the previous fixture at Wembley but the last match White Hart Lane too.

Mourinho must believe in his players and send them out to play in a positive manner and prove they are here to fight for the league and are not a side buried in the graveyard.
