Ruud Van Nistelrooy

Ruud Van Nistelrooy is perhaps one of Manchester United’s most prolific goalscorers ever. In 219 appearances he scored 150 goals, a ratio of a goal every 1.46 games.

The Dutchman failed a medical with the club in 2000 when Sir Alex Ferguson first wanted to bring him to the club. However, in 2001 the legendary manager got his man. Van Nistelrooy soon repaid him too, scoring exactly 100 goals by his third season at Old Trafford.

Van Nistelrooy eventually left Manchester United in 2005 after a bust-up with the manager. Ruud was not happy at being an unused substitute in the League Cup final as Ferguson made a choice between him and Cristiano Ronaldo, a pair who did not see eye to eye. Sir Alex chose to back the young Portuguese prodigy, in hindsight, a good move.
