TRANSFER NEWS: Manchester United interested in signing Alex Sandro

With the signing of right-back Diogo Dalot in June, it seems like Jose Mourinho has made it known he wants to have fresh faces in the defense. So, the news that the Red Devils are interested in singing Alex Sandro from Juventus should come as no surprise.

Ashley Young is currently United’s first choice left-back. Therefore, Sandro would give United a clear upgrade in the position. Not only is the Brazilian younger, at the age of 27, he is also left-footed and is a natural full-back. United won’t miss any of Young’s offensive production on the wing as Sandro likes to bomb forward and use his skills to get past opponents and whip in crosses.

The left-back role has been a problem area for United ever since Patrice Evra left the club. The Red Devils have deployed make-shift players to fill the role. Players like Matteo Darmian and Young, who are not natural left backs have done a job there. Luke Shaw looked destined to take over that spot, but nagging injuries and Mourinho’s lack of confidence in the English defender has left the position open.

In recent seasons, it looked unlikely that Juventus would let its star full-back go, but with the recent signing of former Manchester United star Cristiano Ronaldo, the board may have to sell off some players to recoup its money.

Alex Sandro Stats 2017/2018

Sandro appeared in 22 games for Juventus in the Serie A. He managed four goals and four assists. Defensively, the Brazillian was successful in 31 percent of his tackles, according to Squawka. He was also successful on 71 percent of his take ons, and had a pass accuracy of 86 percent.

If United can complete the signing of Sandro, he will immediately plug into the starting role. Not only will he add his attacking prowess out wide, he will create a strong wall for United’s defense. With this transfer approach, it seems Mourinho is ready to make United’s defense a force to be reckoned with.
