World Cup: How did Manchester United’s England players fare on the world’s biggest stage?
By Ollie Slack
Phil Jones – 5
Jones has not played as many minutes as he would have liked at this World Cup. After his blistering start to the 2017/18 season, the Manchester United centre-half was gaining regular playing time under Gareth Southgate.
The England manager even hailed Jones as England’s best defender. However, as per usual, Jones couldn’t keep himself fit for a whole season. Unfortunately, the injury he picked up was towards the back end of the Premier League season, meaning it was always going to be tough to become a first-team regular again in time for the World Cup.
It’s difficult to mark Jones down for anything, therefore, his mark is bang in the middle. He’ll be hoping for more minutes and a solid performance in the third-place play-off against Belgium on Saturday.
