In Belgium’s final group stage match, Marouane Fellaini finally received the chance to represent Belgium on the world’s biggest stage.

The Manchester United man earned a starting role in Belgium’s final group stage match. After matches with Panama and Tunisia, Belgium’s much awaited match with England did not disappoint. Furthermore, Belgium impressed many early on in the tournament, as they dominated every match they played. Belgium would defeat England 1-0.

Normally, Romelu Lukaku would get the nod to start for Belgium, but the final group stage match left few repercussions if they were to lose. Thus, second team players, such as Marouane Fellaini, earned the chance to play. While both sides fielded their second team, Fellaini did not disappoint.

Early on in the match, Fellaini played a more supportive role to his team. For instance, Fellaini provided support in the attack, as well as dropping back to defend. Since the Manchester United player’s strong suit is in defense, his support in the attack mainly came as the back pass. Yes, the Belgian can poach goals at times, but Belgium does not need a goal poacher like United does.

Additionally, Fellaini came up big for Belgium when England played the ball right into the Belgium eighteen yard box, and Fellaini was the man there to stomp out the attack. If it were not for Fellaini the game may have ended 1-1.

In addition to starring for his country, Fellaini signed a new contract with Manchester United.

According to Sky Sports, Fellaini stated, “I am pleased to be continuing my journey as a Manchester United player. I made this decision because I am very happy here.”

Jose Mourinho always instilled faith into Fellaini as a player, even when the fan base disagreed with the boss’s actions. Fellaini came up big for Belgium in their final group stage match, and it is possible that he can keep up the good form and carry it into the next season. While the Belgian does not start that often, he can provide himself as a solid substitute.
