5. Jesse Lingard

Within the first 30 minutes of England’s opening match against Tunisia Lingard could have had a hat-trick. The United forward missed a number of chances that he should of really at least tested the goalkeeper with.

On the other hand, Lingard was a constant threat. His running from deep in behind the Tunisian defence and quick two-touch play was a danger the whole match. And even when there looked to be no energy left in the England tank, Lingard provided a late burst when best mate Marcus Rashford came on.

4. Marcus Rashford

Many were surprised to see Marcus Rashford not start the match against Tunisia. Especially after his positive display against Costa Rica prior to the tournament. But Southgate had settled on a system with Raheem Sterling in and in the first half it produced.

So Rashford had to wait for his chance. And when he got it he certainly took it. Against a Tunisian wall, there was going to be little space to work with. But Rashford coped easily. Dancing in and out of defenders he was doing his best to provide England with that much needed extra boost of energy to score a late winner.
