Manchester United: World Cup matchday 1 player rankings – Which United star sits on top?!
By Ollie Slack
7. Marcos Rojo
Despite assisting the first goal, Rojo had a difficult first half against a potent Icelandic attack. His shot-cum-pass was a miss hit which fell kindly into the path of Sergio Aguero who scored the opener. But this was as good as it got.
Iceland troubled Argentina in the first half, precisely down their left channel. Rojo and left-back Nicolás Tagliafico struggled at times. This will concern Argentinian fans who can’t be completely convinced by a centre-back pairing of Otamendi and Rojo.
6. Ashley Young
Young had a mixed game for England against Tunisia on Monday. He started off really brightly in the left-wing back position. The United man linked well with his Premier League colleagues and almost assisted teammate Jesse Lingard with his first World Cup goal after a sumptuous cross to the back post.
But as the second half progressed, Young showed his age more and more. As a team, England lacked energy in the second. And despite Young being the most experienced member of Gareth Southgate’s squad, he didn’t show it, giving away needless fouls.
